Do you strive to entertain or inform when you present? There’s no reason you can’t do both. In actual fact there is every reason in the world why you should be striving to do both! My friend and mentor Darren LaCroix, in his humor bootcamp, teaches the bootcampers that, at the height of laughter is where the listening occurs. Laughter is one of the most visible signs that an audience is enjoying your presentation, but it’s not the only one. When you entertain your audience you have a much better chance of informing them of what you want to. As an audience member is entertained he or she will form a deeper connection with you, becoming more receptive to what you are saying in the process.
I read a quote this morning that, stated simply, when we present we are in the entertainment business. Regardless of the environment this holds true. When you stand up and deliver a presentation you are in the entertainment business. So, make sure you entertain!
