When we speak there is no better feeling of an audience that is full of positive energy. To give a presenation where everyone, including the presenter is enjoying themselves, is a great feeling. To achieve that positive energy it can be easy to make the mistake of trying to lead from the front. We try and open like Steve Balmer even when the audience is on a low. The result is a disconnect between the audience and the speaker. Audiences sit back and wonder “Who is this fool? Why do they think I’d want to be enthusiastic just for them?”.
Just because an audience is on a “low” doesn’t mean they can’t end up on a high. They need you, as the speaker, to take them there from the place where they are at. To do this you need to start with an energy level that matches your audience, and over the course of your presentation lift your energy and your audience will reciprocate.
No matter the energy and enthusiasm of your audiences at the beginning you can, in most cases, lift them so your presentations can “rock” their world by the end!
